Surfing the Tsunami's Three Perspectives: Optimist, Pessimist, and Realist

I generally consider myself a realist and will look at all sides before making a decision. I find that life is not black and white, but gray, and artificial intelligence (AI) seems to be the same. As an optimist, there will be great achievements and advancements in technology with the use of AI. As a pessimist, the number and type of jobs will most likely change and with that will come major adjustments. Most people do not enjoy change, but it is necessary to grow and learn. It is also concerning the way human interactions and attention spans have seemed to change with more and more technology and internet usage. As a realist, I think it is important to keep mental and physical health at the forefront of these AI advancements. The advance in technology may be interesting and beneficial in some ways. However, if we are not happy and able to stay focused to achieve more great things as human beings, what is the point.

Attention span changes is one of my bigger concerns for the future. When I was younger, I used to play outside after school, play music, and no TV was allowed until after my homework was finished. I am grateful for that. instead, I would often read books into the night, music helped me focus, and I never had a cell phone for times of boredom (not until high school). In fact, when I studied abroad in Europe in college (2013), Wi-Fi was still not widely available unless we were at coffee shops or cafes. My friend brought her Apple phone, but disabled the phone, and it only worked for Wi-Fi when we were able to find free connections. I had an emergency phone with a certain number of minutes, like a calling card. It was the best times to have our own adventures without a phone -- we used paper directions like MapQuest, and once we made it to our hostels, used a paper map they usually provided. Nowadays, I feel like I always need my phone in case of emergencies, but it has so many other features, and I am constantly checking my phone, for what, I am not sure. I actually still play piano occasionally to refocus and put my phone in a corner if I really need to get work done. As a kid, I never had trouble focusing.

Jobs will change; however, I sincerely hope that healthcare does not lose its human interactions and goes automatic. As much as I like the movie Big Hero 6, Baymax is still only able to be configured by humans and once the algorithms run out, somebody will have to step in anyways. Some of the best parts of being a nurse are those interactions with patients. Taking that away would be detrimental to patients and their mental health. Especially during the height of the Covid pandemic, nothing was worse than patients experiencing extreme isolation from support and loved ones. Technology helped in that some families were able to video call and virtually see each other, but it still is not quite the same as the real deal. I understand that AI will be a part of life and the future will continue to evolve with technology. However, I hope people keep in mind the benefits and disadvantages of technology.

If people cannot focus to complete job tasks, it will be more difficult to continue competing in the AI world. At some point, we still need simple jobs for those who do not want to struggle with complex problems. We also need jobs that are exciting and hands-on for those who cannot sit still all day. There should still be a variety of jobs available for people to choose their passion and pursuit their own goas, regardless of AI advancements. It would be great to make some jobs easier or safer though. With AI, jobs can create a larger impact in the world, especially with globalization and technology to make the more mundane tasks easier, faster, and more automated. One example in healthcare is the use of robots for endoscopy procedures and laparoscopic surgeries. These advancements in AI typically provide better outcomes for patients, decrease the risk of infection, and shorten the recovery time.
