Week 4 Surfing the Tsunami
Adapting is the first step towards responding to artificial intelligence (AI), as stated in Surfing the Tsunami. It involves learning more, being aware of changes, and prioritizing attention. Building a habit takes time, and sometimes a calendar can help keep on task with reminders. Keeping an eye on news outlets and reading books can also help increase knowledge about AI. I used to read more prior to graduate school for pure enjoyment, but now I pretty much spend my free time outside of work and school outdoors and away from technology. I hope once school is finished to resume some of my other hobbies, reading for enjoyment (there is a long list that I have been meaning to get to), and learn other things. Coursera was one of the education websites or apps I tried prior to starting graduate school. I have picked up a Wired magazine or two laying around my parents’ house from time to time, but it almost always seems too far-fetched or sci-fi. I agree that robots are helpful, and automation is great to speed productivity. However, I still prefer the simple things.
At work, technology is imbedded throughout the job. The problem is, when it does not work, nobody is there to fix it overnight. Yes, I have tried the restart button, and clicking my way through to attempt to fix it. However, after a certain point, it is beyond my expertise. Instead, technology has actually made parts of my job more difficult. I try to be hopeful about the newer technology. It usually it sounds great in theory, but in practice it rarely goes as intended. Every couple of years we all receive new phones. It involves staff education, collaboration, troubleshooting, and adjustments. I always attend the information sessions and have helped teach coworkers about the new technology upgrades.
Some advancements in technology have been extremely beneficial though, like medical technology advancements for patients. Some examples include IV smart pumps, insulin pumps, blood glucose monitors, bionic prosthetics, left ventricular assist devices (LVADs -- pictured below), mechanical ventilators, pacemakers, external heart monitors, patient medical portals, telehealth, and more. Of the AI topics, advancements in the medical field are the ones that I would seek out. Even with these advancements, there are still plenty of job opportunities in the healthcare field. I almost feel like there are more job opportunities since now people are needed to troubleshoot technology issues and maintain or analyze the data collected by the machines.
