Hands-On: Creating a Website

To create a website, Google Sites is easy to use with multiple prompts, templates, and suggestions. The Google Help Support and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) sections were beneficial and easy to follow. Same as Google Ads, it requires a Gmail account to be linked and log in. There are suggestion templates, or you can start from the very beginning with a blank screen. I created a marketing consultant website page with a few basic pages. The design and layouts allowed customization and creativity.

On the right-hand side of the website page design, you can insert additional elements, add pages, and create links within the existing webpage to other sites if need be. For example, if you have a restaurant, there are templates that can help link your site to an online reservation site, a third party. Another page I created was about how the company can help the customer.

Each page can be clicked on and switched with the column on the top right-hand side for customers to easily access the information they are looking for about my company. The 'Contact Us' page includes the location, email, and phone number. This page could also link to another platform as well, such as the Facebook Page, Instagram account, or other social media pages if created for the specific company. The location can also be linked to Google Maps to provide customers directions at the click of a button. It saves time to copy and paste the address.

Another page created was about the 'Mission, Vision, and Values' for the company. This provided basic information about the company's purpose and goals to achieve. It showcases what the company finds important and focus. For a restaurant, this page could instead include reviews from previous customers, or a newspaper review showcasing any awards earned in the past.

Once the website is created to your liking, click 'Publish' and the website is up and running. However, Google Sites creates very long website names that are not easy for customers to remember or type in. For that reason, it may be worthwhile to create a Google Domain. More information on Google Domains can be found at Hands-On: Setting Up Google Domains

I found creating the website to be fun, creative, and not too complicated. I was surprised it was not more difficult and initially thought the task was quite daunting. I am someone who struggles to use Uber half the time (location never seems to be quite right). I even used a Divvy bike for the first time about 2 weeks ago -- I had no idea you could use the Lyft app to rent a bike. I like my own bike, but I really think I avoided Divvy for as long as I did because it was just another app to learn. Learn something new every day. Point being, technology is always changing, but it might not always be as difficult as originally thought.
