Week 7 Ascend Your Start-Up

To achieve goals, you must learn to trust other people and utilize cultural collaboration, according to Helen Yu in Ascend Your Start-Up. A simple set of shared beliefs can be used to align the day-to-day strategies. Help one another, show gratitude, be transparent, and learn to understand one another. People make up the 80% of change management while technology makes up about 20% of overall success. 'Growth thrives at the intersection of humanity and technology.' As a leader, it is imperative that people feel valued, have a voice, and champion those who are underrepresented. when working with investors, determine if they align with your core values as well. Compare their track record, determine the amount of control they have over you, and determine if they are the right fit or not. Encourage honesty and positive change with real conversations and expression of ideas and opinions to inspire innovation. Be grateful for your team to focus on relationship building.

Empathy is largely important in work culture. It can be inspiring and provides understanding that you are on the same team, working together. As a nurse, this is highly evident when working with patients as well as coworkers. We all have good and bad days, but working together, supporting each other, and listening can really make or break a shift. Grace goes a long way with fostering relationships. Being supportive and learning to work through things as a team may take some emotional finesse. It is nearly impossible to help someone who will not listen or accept help. However, if you listen first and change the perception of the issue, the other person will most likely return the favor and try to come up with a suitable solution. Have some patience for yourself and others.

There are four actions you can take to prepare for adversity: look up, prepare and stay the course, celebrate small victories, and inspire believers and work together. Make the overarching goal achievable by creating smaller goals and victories. Be resilient, prepared, and learn and grow along the journey. Celebrate along the way -- it is a long path to success, and it can be challenging. Nothing great was built overnight. It took time, energy, and a collective effort. Respect the team and listen to others -- heeding others advice may lead to accelerated growth.

Most importantly, make time for your family and yourself. As a founder or being in the C-suite can be lonely and must involve a level of confidence and self-assurance. Work will never go away, but it is important to take some breaks, allow room to think for yourself, and have some hobbies to stay involved with others (unrelated to work). Work-life balance is crucial for happiness. One thing about being a nurse is that work is scheduled by shiftwork. You can sign up for overtime, but it is not mandatory. Some shifts are much more challenging than others and can be physically and emotionally exhausting. Taking time away from work helps recharge. There is only so much that can be accomplished at a given time -- there are only 24 hours in a day. Sometimes just take the day, recollect your thoughts, and relax. Time is not the enemy, but rather learn to enjoy the journey, one day at a time. Stay special.
